SENSIS MULTILATERATION AND ADS-B SYSTEM PROVIDES AIR SURVEILLANCE FOR US NAVY AT PATUXENT RIVERDEWITT, NY - November 1, 2001 - Sensis Corporation received a contract from DynCorp Range Technical Services, Lexington Park, Maryland to provide a proof of concept for an advanced air surveillance system for the Naval Air Station at Patuxent River, Maryland. The system's multilateration and Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) sensors provide precise positional information at a rate of once per second, which traditional rotating radar can not provide, capturing the high speed tactical maneuvers during test range activities. Aircraft will be tracked from altitudes of 3500' to 50,000' over a 400 square mile area.
The system locates and identifies targets by utilizing inexpensive compact sensors on the ground that listen for transponder signals and triangulate them to determine the position of the signal's source. The transponder signals are also encoded with aircraft data, which the sensors decode and provide to air traffic controllers. Traditional transponders typically provide aircraft identification and altitude information. Advanced ADS-B transponders also broadcast latitude, longitude, velocity and heading information - as determined by the on-board avionics and the Global Navigation Satellite System.
