MULTILATERATION SURFACE SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM TO BE INSTALLED AT HEATHROW AIRPORT

DEWITT, NY - February 26, 2000 - Sensis Corporation was awarded a contract by National Air Traffic Services (NATS) to install its Multistatic Dependent Surveillance (MDS) multilateration system at London's Heathrow Airport (LHR). The airport surface surveillance system will provide accurate position estimates and positive identification of all transponder equipped aircraft operating in runway, taxiway, ramp and gate areas. The MDS surveillance data will be integrated with an existing Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control Systems (A-SMGCS) to provide NATS air traffic controllers with enhanced airport situational awareness. In addition to the safety benefits inherent in improved situational awareness, MDS will contribute to improved capacity.

The Sensis MDS system receives signals from transponders already installed on aircraft and applies advanced time difference of arrival processing algorithms. This method of surveillance yields DGPS-like accuracy while avoiding all issues associated with the reliability and availability of GPS satellite signals. The MDS system compliments an airport's surface movement radar (SMR) by providing cooperative surveillance, much like secondary surveillance radar (SSR) compliments primary surveillance radar (PSR) in the terminal and enroute environment. The flexible architecture of the MDS system also allows it to provide air surveillance in the airport area for applications such as Precision Runway Monitoring.

London's Heathrow Airport is the fourth busiest airport in the world. Sensis also has contracts to install MDS systems at Frankfurt Airport in Germany and Memphis Airport in the United States. An MDS system was previously installed at Dallas Fort Worth Airport during August 1999.

National Air Traffic Services (NATS) provides air traffic services to aircraft over-flying United Kingdom airspace, and flying into or out of major UK airports such as Heathrow. The UK is recognized as a world leader in air traffic control, and the continual development and replacement of new technology allows NATS to further increase safety, while reducing delays to passengers and improving service to airlines.
